Iredell County Sports Hall of Fame

The Iredell County Sports Hall of Fame has selected the five athletes that will be inducted into this years hall of fame class. These five have contributed to the Iredell County community as student athletes and later in life through every stage of their lives. These nominees were announced by Executive Director Steve Rankin and Selection Committee Chairman Kenney Miller. 

Former Mooresville Police Captain Frank Owens will also receive the annual Harold Johnson Community Partner Award. This years induction banquet will be held on Monday, May 20th 6:00 pm at the Statesville Civic Center. 

Lets take a closer look at the honorees:

Josh Lawdowski
Lake Norman
(2010-2014)

  • Played football & baseball

  • Set a state record of 5,647 offensive yards in 2014

  • 6th in NC HS touchdown history with 155 

  • Played baseball at UNC

Matt Matheny
North Iredell
(1984-1988)

  • Played football, basketball, tennis

  • Lead North Iredell to only 10-0 football season

  • A 3x All-Conference tennis player

  • Played football & basketball for Davidson College

  • Played pro football in Germany

  • Successful men’s basketball coach

Jimmy Popp
Mooresville
(1979-1983)

  • Played football, basketball,baseball, golf

  • All-conference in all four sports 

  • MVP honors in football, basketball, baseball

  • Coached at Citadel, UNC Chapel Hill, Alabama State, UNC Charlotte

  • GM for 21 seasons in the Canadian Football Leauge

  • Current VP of the USFL

Amy Cartner Rogers
North Iredell
(1980-1984)

  • Played basketball, volleyball, track, softball

  • 1984 Girls 3A Basketball Champion 

  • 1984 Girls Basketball Conference POY

  • Named to the Girls Basketball West squad for the East-West Game

  • Volleyball Team Captain as a Sr.

  • North Iredell Valedictorian 

  • Played Girls Basketball at Wake Forest

Keith Walker
Statesville
(1973-1977)

  • Played basketball

  • Averaged 23.7 and 28.3 points per game & over 10 rebounds as a Jr./Sr.

  • Played basketball for Mitchell College & Clemson

  • Played professional basketball in Turkey, Belgium, Italy, France

  • Has coached basketball at the college level most recently in 2023

Frank Owens
Community Partner Service Award

  • Athletic Director for Gresham-Baker American Legion Post 66

  • Headed the legion baseball program for over 30 years

  • A booster for local teams & athletes for over 50 years

  • Score keeper for local youth teams

  • Inducted into the NC American Legion HOF in 2009

  • Presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. Bev Perdue
